I like to think I DID learn to make better holiday films, and had quite a collection of trophies by the time I left the club in 2021. My techinical talent was not as good as others, but I seemed to have a knack for creativity.
I also learned the importance of good audio, and found myself become a script writer, editor and film director. I was even Chair for a couple of years.
I have a Fuji XT4 for photography and filming, and used a GOPRO as my action camera for many years. I recently changed to a DJI Osmo Action camera, and also bought a DJI Neo 2 Drone. I use DJI microphones too. I use the drone mostly for smooth relativley low shots, and love having it along on some of my bike rides to track me. Such fun. I rarely featured in my cycling films before, but the drone has changed that. I hope to gain more confidence this year to fly it high to include a few shots to set the scene. I still have "drone pilot anxiety", so although I love it, don't find it at all relaxing!
I list a few films below. A mix of Documentary, Fiction and a couple of travel films. I have used the idea of poetry on a few occassions for short films... something else I had never written before.
Each film will open in Youtube. I have given the option to click onto the next film by means of an inset picture a few seconds before the end of each film, rather come back or get lost in Youtube.
Some films will have a few seconds of BLACK screen to start. This is a requirement if entered into competitions.
A TV Nature competition I entered. Got runner up!
It's still shown on TV now on UChannel.
DOCUMENTARY. 1min (5 seconds black to start)
A visit to a very blowy seaside location, called Birling Gap.
I switched to slo-mo a few times, to capture the scene.
DOCUMENTARY. 2 mins
Filmed in my own garden to represent High Summer
DOCUMENTARY 10 mins
A project which "evolved". I set out to film a piece about a friend who lives and travels on the canals. However he introduced to me some other really interesting people. A pleasure to make this one.
DOCUMENTARY. 2.5 mins
Drone footage both high and low, around a local
Churchyard. (I am a nervous drone pilot!)
FICTION. 4 mins
A Lockdown film.
The idea for this came about, since I wanted to attempt a greenscreen technique. The starting point was that we had a rather unusual Chess Set.
FICTION. 4 mins (5 seconds black to start)
The frosty atmosphere in the woods inspired me to write a piece of poetry as the script.
I captured some of the frosty scenes two years previously, and was waiting for similar conditions to turn my footage into a Fictional piece. I borrowed a black cloak from my local theatre.
FICTION. 3 mins (5 seconds black to start)
Made during the very strange time known as Lockdown 3.
Filmed using Macro Garden subjects & set against green sceen. A depressing start, but with signs of hope.
FICTION . 1 min. (5 seconds black to start)
A challenge to make a one minute film, with the word DIAMOND included.
I used greenscreen for this, and designed the digitial background on my tablet.
FICTION. 9 mins (5 seconds black to start)
WINNER OF THE SOUTHERN COUNTIES FILM CLUB COMPETITION 2017 , and also 3 stars at BIAFF International Film Festival. Locations include The Watercress Line, and Worthing Pier to create a 1940's setting.
I wrote & directed. A willing cast of 1000's.
FICTION. 9 mins
Awarded 4 Stars at BIAFF 2020. A young girl's happy memories of precious times with her granddad. Written and directed by myself, and filmed by camera crews from Reading Film and Video Makers. Acting roles fulfilled by friends and local actors.
FICTION. 6mins (5 seconds black to start)
Received a nomination for Originality. I wrote the poem for the script.
I wanted to make a film to represent a moment in time in my life. I asked friends from various groups to take part. A collaboration of cyclists, camera club friends, and film club friends. I even got my hairdresser to read the Poem!
TRAVEL. 4 mins
A 2 day visit to the beautiful Applecross Peninsula in West Scotland.
TRAVEL. 4 mins (5 seconds black to start)
Filmed whilst visting the Amalphi Coast. Herculameum is a lesser known site than Pompei, but very interesting.
TRAVEL. 4 mins
2 days visit the Isle of Mull.
A fantastic week of cycling in Scotland. Hard work at times, 4,000 feet on day one alone, but loved the downhills!
If you want to see some spectacular scenery, this cycling trip along the Caledonian Way from the Mull of Kyntyre on Scotlands west coast, to Inverness is hard to beat. It's around 30 mins.
Most of my holiday films and cycling films are too long to feature here, but if interest do take a look at my YouTube channel PLAYLISTS called HOLIDAYS and CYCLING. Films include Alaska, Vancouver Island, Island hopping in Croatia, Provence, Bordeau, Lisbon, Italy, Mallorca, Viennna to Budapest, Italy, Rhone cruise, UK holidays in Suffolk, Norfolk, Wiltshire, Cotswolds.
